Who Can Benefit from Therapy?

Therapy has been proven to significantly improve symptoms related to a variety of mental health problems, including:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Trauma
  • Schizophrenia
  • Mood disorders
  • Gender Dysphoria

In addition to helping individuals manage symptoms of notably difficult mental illnesses and disorders, therapy can also be utilized by those without a diagnosed condition. For example, therapy can help to cope with daily stressors, or to better communicate with those around you.

It is also common for Dr. Robertson to recommend therapy in combination with medication to treat a patient’s condition.

Types of Therapy

Talk therapy can be broken down into several more specific subtypes. These subtypes may vary based on the particular patient, their history, and Dr. Robertson’s professional opinion on which type of therapy may be most beneficial.

The most common types of therapy used today include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): This therapy is focused on changing the way an individual reacts to a given situation. It focuses on the connection among thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy: This type of therapy is related to CBT, and is especially useful in treating those struggling with PTSD, borderline personality disorder, and eating disorders.
  • Interpersonal therapy (IPT): IPT is centered around a person’s relationships with others. This form of therapy is very beneficial in making short-term changes so that a person may express themselves more healthily.
  • Psychodynamic therapy: Many current behaviors can be traced back to behaviors learned in childhood. Psychodynamic therapy is based on identifying these behaviors, what influences them, and how they can be altered to improve the quality of the patient’s life and relationships.
  • Supportive therapy: During supportive therapy sessions, Dr. Robertson will offer support and encouragement for a patient’s healthy behaviors. The idea of this type of therapy is to increase the patient’s self-esteem and reduce their anxiety in social situations.

An individual’s therapy is not limited to one particular subtype. Any number of these therapy methods may be implemented based on Dr. Robertson’s expert insights into the patient’s history in addition to their ongoing progress. It is also possible to introduce elements of other therapeutic techniques like creative arts therapy, or animal-assisted therapy.

Which Type of Therapy is Right for Me?

Every individual is different and comes with a unique past and history of experiences. Only after fully evaluating which particular issues you are currently struggling with in your daily life will Dr. Robertson be able to recommend a particular therapy that is ideal for you.
